What I learned at FHE

FHE was here last night and Eldon led the discussion on Elder Oaks' talk on service from the last conference. It was a profound, to-the-point talk that made you want to check yourself. It was actually a list of what selfish people do versus what unselfish people do.

Unselfish people, young and old, go on missions. Selfish people think of reasons not to go.

Unselfish people have children and make sacrifices for them. Selfish people decide not to have children.

Unselfish people try to make the world a better place and are engaged in helping others. Selfish people think only of themselves.

Unselfish people cooperate and are generous. Selfish people are greedy and want to get something for nothing and feel entitled to things. (They may even gamble or borrow excessively to get what they want.)

Unselfish people go to church to contribute and make a positive difference. Selfish people go for what they can get and cease going when their needs are not met.

Our discussion also made our group realize that we're serving more than we think we are in our own homes.

Meet our Cub Scouts!

Today we held our second den meeting. We're talking about collections this month and Eldon got them started on both a seashell and a stamp collection.

Left to right:
Gabe, hyperactive, can't say his r's, but a huge vocabulary, freckled, very engaging
Rees, the youngest in the den, eldest of 4 boys, his dad is in the young men's and his mom Primary secretary
Joshuah, soon to become a Webelo, his mom is Primary president and his dad is Cubmaster
Nate, also a bear, home schooled, his mom is in charge of day camp and in the Primary presidency
Daniel, new, not yet a member, inactive parents, Korean mother

All of them are eager to participate. Eldon is having a ball.

Labor Day weekend

What a great weekend!

First we went up to Salem to witness the blessing of our great grandson, David Cyrus Goodwin. See Ken's blog for pictures. His dad gave him a nice blessing. He's a fine healthy baby with an amazing complexion.

Then we drove to Central Point to visit Neil's family. Everybody was fine except Pam had a cold. Gideon has gotten taller and is starting to look more like Zachary. He can say "Grandpa"!

On Monday we went on a 5-mile hike with the Webelos. Pam is the leader and Erik is now in her den. Lots of parents came, including Neil. Eldon taught them to identify some trees. It was a beautiful forest over in Jacksonville and there was quite a variety of trees. Look at all the arrows on Erik's shirt!

Then we went to see Zachary's Eagle project which is planting a hummingbird garden by a veteran's memorial. It was an awesome place. We did some weeding while we were there.

On Tuesday we drove home, stopping by the Wildlife Safari in Winston. We saw lots of interesting animals as we drove through the park. We took pictures of several including the brown bear, giraffe, rhea, and bactrian camel.
