Today Neil is running the ultra marathon at Waldo Lake. It's a grueling 62.5 miles long of difficult mountain terrain! They started at 5 am and right now (9:23 am) he's in 6th place.
Last year he missed this race because of our reunion at Heber Valley. Quite a sacrifice I think, as he probably wanted to defend his record from the year before when he earned the course record for masters in 10:02:39. Most of us were there to support him. The Dodges, Andrei, and we were camping at Waldo Lake. Here's a picture of him crossing the finish line which I didn't actually see because as usual, he came in earlier than he predicted he would!
I'll post the results later. Right now, I'm just keeping him in my prayers.
Postscript: He came in 13th overall, 10th in the men, 3rd in his age group. 11 hours and 37 minutes. Hope he gives us details in his blog.

THAT'S MY DADDY!! =D
Some years it has been more grueling than others. This year I was about at my goal pace to start with, then slipped a little, the realized my legs were already getting tired and that I wasn't going to be able to maintain that, which meant that the next 42 miles were going to make for a very long day. So I dialed my speed back, which allowed me recover a little, but that ran out by the next hill. Based on my observations of input and output, I figured I was getting dehydrated. But if I ran harder I got more nauseated, so that was a limiter as well. I took short breaks at the aid stations which helped some, and I stopped caring whether people passed me. It really is beautiful country, and I tried to enjoy that. The last 16 miles I walked anything that wasn't downhill or at least flat, and some things that were. I would run for a minute or two then walk. I would use the excuse of getting pine needles and debris out of my shoe to stop, but the mosquitoes limited that. The last killer climb I had a couple of people kindly match their pace to mine for a time to keep me company. I know the guy that won it by reputation. I knew he was fast, but I didn't realize he was able to beat Eric Skaggs' course record. And he's over 40, so he killed my masters record by 47 minutes. Skipping it last year was only a sacrifice if you define sacrifice as giving up something good for something better. I'm going to sacrifice doing 100k's in the future unless I can figure out and replicate what I was doing in my training different in order to go faster and less painfully like 2009.
57 minutes, not 47. Thanks for the prayers! It's really not much of a spectator sport. Following on-line was as good as being there.
You made 13th out of 100s--you're still doing alright! Dad
There is a story, perhaps fable, that our ancestor Andreas would run from Pleasant Grove to Salt Lake and back in a day – that would be about 60 miles, so you've got him beat not even adding the terrain!
It's always fun to be part of team Neil!!!
